FAQ

WHAT IS COSMETIC TATTOOING?

Cosmetic tattooing, as known as semi permanent make up, micro pigmentation or brow embroidery, is the process of implanting color pigment beneath the surface of the skin through tiny, sterile, disposable needles to create the appearance of hair strokes or other enhancements to the face. Unlike traditional body tattooing, it is more soft and subtle as pigment is only deposited into the first 2 dermal layers of skin that will naturally fade with time. It is a safe procedure following the Alberta Health Services guidelines with strict attention to detail in how our environment and tools are sterilized and disinfected.

WHY BROW FEATHERING?

This advanced manual technique of creating hair like strokes mimics your natural brows, can be corrective for full and even brows, camouflage scars or sparse areas, sweat and water proof and are semi permanent which gives freedom to adjust your brow shape as you age or trends change.

WHO CAN BENEFIT?

Microblading is perfectly suited for those who are interested in enhancing their own natural beauty, as well as those who suffer from alopecia, chemotherapy or other hair loss causes. It is also an option for those who have over tweezed, who’s hair is light, sparse or an undesired shape. It is beneficial for those who value an extra time in their make up routine or desire water / sweat proof brows. Microblading is open to all genders and skin types.

WILL MICROBLADING WORK WELL FOR ME?

In most cases, microblading is an effective procedure, however, there are some limitations:

  • If you have extremely oily skin, the oil causes the hair strokes to heal more diffused, resulting in softer brows than someone with dry skin, similar to someone with an active lifestyle with a high propensity for sweating.
  • If you have little to no existing hair, your tattoo will appear more 2 dimensional than those with more natural hair and may require more frequent touch ups
  • If you are a frequent smoker, iron deficient or Anemic, your pigment may fade sooner
  • If your brows have been previously tattooed, we require you email us a clear photo prior to booking your appoint to confirm if we can complete your service as we cannot guarantee results and may not be able to accommodate your service. In some circumstances, the previous tattoo may be too dark, dense or discolored and may require removal before our services will be considered and typically require additional services.

CAN I DO THIS IF I AM PREGNANT OR NURSING?

NO. As a precaution, we do not perform any microblading services on pregnant or nursing women.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER HEALTH RESTRICTIONS?

Microblading is not a suitable procedure if any of the following apply to you:

  • under 18 years old
  • allergic to anesthetics or topical anesthetics
  • tendency to develop Keloid scars
  • pregnant or nursing (as previously mentioned)
  • taking prescription blood thinners
  • suffer from Hemophilia
  • suffer from Epilepsy
  • currently taking any skin products containing Retin-A or retinols (avoid use for
10 days prior and 30 days following your complimentary touch up appointment)
  • must not have taken Accutane for 1 year prior
  • currently receiving Chemotherapy treatments (consult your Doctor prior to booking)
  • feeling unwell, ie) virus, cold, flue, fever, headache (please reschedule once you are well)
  • if receiving Botox, wait 2 weeks before or after your appointment
  • broken capillaries in the eyebrow area
  • skin problems around the eyebrow area, such as psoriosis, excema, acne, rash, wound or scab
  • any viral infections, including but not limited to HIV or Hepatitus
  • prone to infections or have a compromised immune system
  • let us know prior to your appointment if you are taking any medication that may prohibit successful results from your service

WHAT IS THE PROCESS?

Consultation and Brow Design (30 Min)

All appointments include a brow consultation where we discuss your brow goals
together and then create a shape that will enhance your natural facial features by
using tools to obtain symmetry as close as possible. Faces are not symmetrical,
but we will do our best. We will also discuss your pigment based on skin tone, then hair color to determine the most natural color.

Numbing (30 Min)

A topical anesthetic (5% lidocaine cream) is applied for 30 minutes prior to the
procedure and reapplied during the procedure to ensure maximum comfort.

Tattooing (60 – 90 Min)

Through a hand held tool, the chosen pigment colors are implanted into the dermal layer to enhance brows with hair like strokes within the designed brow shape. We schedule each client for 2 1/2 hours from start to finish to ensure we are thorough and you leave confident and satisfied.

DOES IT HURT?

A highly effective, topical anesthetic cream is used for numbing before and during your procedure. Although threshold levels change between each person, every effort is made to ensure that your are comfortable throughout your service. Having the service completed during your menstrual cycle, or are frequent smoker or have fibromyalgia may increase your discomfort and affect your sensitivity tolerance to the procedure. It may not be recommended for clients who are extremely pain sensitive. Clients have found the sensation to be similar to waxing or threading.

DO YOU SHAVE THE NATURAL BROW HAIRS?

NO. We incorporate as much of the natural brow as possible and any stray hairs outside of the brow design will be removed through tweezing. It is possible to book a maintenance appointment with one of our Brow Artists up to 5 days prior to your service as well. Facial services are not recommended during the healing process 7 -10 days after.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR MICROBLADING?

  • Bring any reference photos or with your brows powdered
  • We recommend booking your service at least 14 days prior to any vacations
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol the night before and day of your procedure
  • Shower prior to service (cannot the day following your service)
  • Do not work out the day of our service
  • Avoid waxing or tinting up to 5 days prior to your appointment
  • Do not take Aspirin, Advil, Vitamin E, Niacin, fish oil supplements or Ibuprofen (or any other known blood thinners) within 24 hours prior to your procedure

WHAT IS THE HEALING PROCESS?

Immediately your brows may have minimal visible signs of redness, swelling, which subsides within the day. After your service, your brows will appear crisp and up to 3 shades darker for the first 3 – 5 days. It is natural and normal for your brows to create a crust. As the scabs peel, the hair strokes will gradually tuck in, soften and lighten up. We will ensure you are educated with our aftercare to take care of your brows as they heal. Longterm aftercare is essential as we understand you have made an investment in your brows.

HOW WILL MY BROWS LOOK IN THE FUTURE?

Your cosmetic tattoo will soften and have more of a powdered look, which happens with every client as the skin ages. The pigment will lighten naturally over time. If your tattoo dos not heal perfectly after your initial service, do not worry as we can always add depth of color and density in your complimentary touch up. To keep hair strokes fresh, an annual maintenance appointment is recommended every 1 – 2 years. Results vary with each client.

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?

1 – 3 years depending on:

  • aftercare (how well you followed instructions)
  • lifestyle + physical activity / sweating
  • sun exposure (use sunblock once healed) and tanning beds
  • skin type (oily/dry) and rate of cell renewal
  • pigment color (darker pigments last longer)
  • facial services

DO YOU OFFER A GUARANTEE ON RESULTS?

We cannot offer any guarantees as this process is highly individualized, due to the nature of working with skin. The countless factors, listed above, play a significant role in how your tattoo will heal.

DO I NEED A TOUCH UP AND IF SO, HOW OFTEN?

We offer a complimentary touch up 6 – 8 weeks within your initial service which is essential in the process of building up a strong foundation to last as long as possible. In your follow up service, we observe how your brows have healed and if any necessary changes need to be made for further density, symmetry or depth of color. Please note that any additional changes from your original brow design may need a further touch up at an additional charge. In the future, we recommend an annual touch up to maintain your brows. Multiple sessions are normal in cosmetic tattoo procedures to refresh your brows.

AFTER CARE

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR NEW TATTOO

Aftercare is quite simple, but essential for longevity of your brow investment. We’ve done our part in crafting natural looking hair strokes, so now the rest is up to you. This information acts as a guideline for your after care process only, as each client’s skin responds uniquely to this service. The healing process can last between 10 – 14 days. We recommend gently cleansing the tattooed area 2 -3 times a day with luke warm water ONLY with a cotton round and pat to dry. Keep the area clean and free from make up, letting it breathe. If your skin starts to feel tight and dry, apply sparingly brand new scent coconut oil with a q tip as needed. Do not touch your tattoo with your fingers.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Remember to be PATIENT as like any cosmetic procedure this is a process. Do not expect immediate results and please be patient. It will be a few weeks before you can fully appreciate the results, and you will love them! Your skin will be temporarily sensitized after the treatment and you should adhere to the following instructions for the next ten (10) days. This will help avoid infection and will allow time for the skin to recover.

  • If you apply makeup during the 10 days following the treatment, you do so at your own risk.
  • Anticipate mild swelling, redness and irritation- it should subside within 24 hours.
  • You can cleanse the treatment area with lukewarm water two or three times a day with a cotton round and pat to dry, if needed.
  • Apply your aftercare cream with a cotton swab only daily (pack some with you in a ziplock bag with your aftercare container for on the go). Use as needed to keep it from drying or itchy and use to create a barrier when showering / working out. You may apply unscented coconut oil, as long as it is new and not cross contaminated.
  • It is perfectly normal for the treated area to scab. These scabs will fall off within a few days and the color will fade and can seem like it is “disappearing”. Within the a few weeks the hair strokes will slowly reappear as your skin regenerates to their true color.
  • Anticipate the tattooed area to appear bolder in color and sharply defined in the first few days. However, it is normal for the color to fade during the two weeks following the treatment. Immediately after the procedure the area treated will look much darker and much more defined than the final results. Be prepared for the colour to be significantly lighter and the overall appearance much softer and more natural after the healing occurs.

WHAT NOT TO DO

During the post treatment period, please try to avoid the following:

  • NO exercising and / or sweating for a few days after
  • Using soaps, cleansers, creams or makeup on the treated area (ie, anti acne, anti aging products)
  • Facial treatments, including eyelash or eyebrow tinting or tweezing, electrolysis, waxing etc.
  • Any abrasive products, rough towels or similar
  • DO NOT TOUCH or PICK the small scabs that may appear after the treatments
  • Taking hot baths, saunas, steam or any other heat treatment or soaking your face underwater. The treated area should be kept as dry as possible
  • Sunbathing, using sun beds or swimming (wear hat or sunglasses)

Should an infection occur, seek medical attention. Signs of infection: hot to touch, swollen, pus and redness

LONG TERM AFTER CARE ONCE HEALED

After care plays a key role in the longevity of your tattoo, even months after the healing process. Here are some recommendations for maintaining your investment:

  • Exposure to the sun over time can cause fading and discoloration of the pigment. Once your tattoo is fully healed, you may apply sunscreen on the treated area. Continue to wear a brimmed hat and / or big sunglasses to protect your brows
  • Let any technicians know about your tattoo in future facial treatments to avoid lightening the pigment, including but not limited to: glycolic acid, microdermabrasion, and chemical face peel products, laser resurfacing or laser hair removal (laser procedures may darken, lighten, or discolor the tattooed area)

POLICIES

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR NEW TATTOO

As discussed in our FAQ’s, we cannot guarantee results as the nature of skin is very individual and we do not have any control over the healing process within your aftercare. Additional touch ups may be required for best results beyond the complimentary touch up.

CORRECTIVE OR PREVIOUS BROW TATTOO WORK

Prior to booking your appointment, it is imperative you email us a photo of your existing brow tattoo to thebrowstudio.mission@shaw.ca so that we can assess if we can go forward in any corrective work as we can only go darker and thicker. We maintain that we cannot guarantee results and if the existing tattoo is too dense, dark, discolored or large, tattoo removal may be recommended before any services can commence for the best results. It is typical for multiple sessions to be needed for best results and touch ups will be charged accordingly.

CANCELLATION POLICY + NO SHOWS

We require 72 hours of notice to reschedule an appointment. Please contact us if you are not able to make your appointment or if you are going to be late. Being 15 minutes late may result in canceling your appointment and will need to rebook. We understand that life can offer unforeseen events, but please be considerate of our time. No shows may be required to secure a deposit for additional appointments. It is recommended to arrive 10 minutes early as we offer street parking.
